People like the idea of living in a secure complex and this is one of the reasons people are attracted to strata living. Unfortunately, the locked front door of the complex leads to most living with a false sense of security.

According to WA Police statistics there have been 95 burglaries from residents in Perth’s CBD in the past year resulting in 107 robberies. It is believed that more that seventy percent of these occurred in so called secure complexes.

So what can you do to avoid becoming a statistic?

The police recommend you implement simple but effective crime prevention strategies such as:

  • Ensuring vehicles are locked when home or out
  • Minimising items stored in car bays of common access areas
  • Making sure that windows and doors are locked
  • Ensuring car keys are kept in an area of the home where a thief in unlikely to find them.

You need to remember that a strata building is only so secure and while it may be difficult for uninvited guests to enter, any number of residents, guests, and tradespeople, etc do have access and may let anyone who appears to have a legitimate reason into the building.

And let’s not forget the number of residents and past tenants that cut keys.
